Why is Bone Graft Needed?

Bone grafts may be needed during different procedures. The first of these is implant surgery. If there is insufficient bone in the area to be implanted, the bone volume in the area to be implanted is increased with bone grafts. This significantly increases the success of the implant operation.

Sometimes it may be necessary to use bone grafts after procedures such as tooth extraction or cyst operations. Bone powders are of great importance in order to prevent defects that may occur in the operated area.

In the molar region of the upper jaw, sometimes the sinus membrane may prevent implantation. In this case, bone grafts may be needed to fill the gap that will be formed by removing the sinus membrane during Sinus Lifting applications.

In order to stop the resorption of the jawbone, if the area is suitable, it would be correct to place an immediate implant following tooth extraction.

How to Apply Bone Powder?

First, the source of the bone graft is decided. If it is decided to use a graft to be obtained from the patient himself/herself, local anesthesia is applied to both the area where the graft will be obtained and the area where it will be applied. The graft is harvested from the donor area with various hand tools and rotary instruments. It is then transported to the area where the graft will be applied with the help of special tools.

If the bone graft will be obtained from animals or artificially, local anesthesia is applied only to the area where the graft will be applied. The bone grafts are then transported to the area with the help of spatulas.

Is There Pain During Bone Powder Administration?

The area is numbed with local anesthesia before the application. Thus, the patient is prevented from feeling any pain or discomfort.

What Should Be Considered After Bone Powder Application?

  • After the operation, the area should be compressed with ice.
  • Prescribed medications should be used completely.
  • For the first few days, you should eat with the other side, not with the treated area.
  • The surgically treated areas should not be irritated with hard foods, and care should be taken to eat soft food.
  • Avoid extremely hot foods and drinks.
  • When brushing the teeth around the surgically treated area, a soft brush should be preferred.
  • If the bone graft is used for Sinus Lifting procedure, pressurized nose cleaning should be avoided and care should be taken to keep the mouth open during sneezing.

What is Implant Application with Bone Powder?

If there is insufficient bone in the area where the implant is to be made, the area around the implant is supported with bone powder, i.e. bone grafts. This ensures that the implant is healthier and can be used for many years.

When Does Bone Powder Fuse?

This period varies depending on the type of bone graft and the procedure to be performed. If the bone graft is applied as a powder to support the implant, 3-4 months is sufficient for union.

If the bone graft is used for Sinus Lifting application or if large volume bones are used in the form of blocks, this period can be up to 6-12 months.

In Which Cases Are Jawbone Powders Used?

Bone graft can be used for different procedures. The first of these is implant surgery. If there is insufficient bone in the area to be implanted, the bone volume in the area to be implanted is increased with bone grafts. This significantly increases the success of the implant operation.

Which Patients Are Suitable for Jaw Bone Powders?

It is suitable for all patients with bone insufficiency and without any health barriers for the surgical procedure.

How Is Jawbone Graft Obtained? What are the Types?

Bone Grafts

  • Autogenous Graft: From the patient’s own
  • Allograft: From another person
  • Xenograft Animal
  • Alloplast: It can be obtained by artificial means.
  • Bone grafts obtained from the patient themselves are the healthiest way. However, they often require additional surgical procedures and the formation of additional wound areas may affect patient comfort.

In order to prevent additional surgical procedures, sterilized human (allograft) or animal (xenograft) bone grafts also give successful results. For patients who do not want to use a graft from a living being for different reasons, a graft can be obtained in the laboratory environment. These grafts obtained by artificial means are called Alloplast.

Bone grafts can also be classified as small particles in the form of powder or large pieces in the form of blocks. Those with small particles in powder form are generally used to support the existing bone, while those in large pieces are intended to completely increase the bone level of patients with advanced bone loss.

What is Bone Insufficiency?

Bone insufficiency is a condition that occurs when the bone resorbs and melts for various reasons. The person may have congenital bone deficiency or may experience this condition due to external factors.

In Which Situations Does Bone Insufficiency Occur?

There are various causes of bone failure:

  • Congenital (congenital)
  • Genetic factors
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Cystic and tumoral formations
  • Wrong surgical procedures
  • Advanced gum diseases (Periodontitis)

How is an Implant Done if There is Bone Insufficiency?

In cases of advanced bone loss, bone volume can be increased by various methods or this obstacle can be overcome with different types of implants.

If the bone volume in the area to be implanted is to be increased, large volume bone grafts in the form of blocks can be used instead of bone grafts with small particles in the form of powder. After increasing the amount of bone in the area with this method, implants can be placed in this bone.

If the bone volume cannot be increased or if the patient does not want to choose this method, different implants can be used. For the upper jaw, Zygoma Implants can be placed in the cheekbones to overcome the insufficiency of the jawbone.

Another method is Subperiosteal Implants. Unlike endosteal implants placed inside the jawbone, these implants can be screwed into the bone to surround the bone. Thus, bone insufficiency is overcome.

There is a very low probability of various complications in bone grafting applications. Especially in the presence of chronic sinusitis, there may be a risk of inflammation in the grafting process with Sinus Lifting.

The healing time varies depending on the type of bone graft used and the area to be grafted. This period varies between 3 and 12 months.

As with any surgery performed in the mouth area, very hot and hard foods and drinks should be avoided. Warm and soft foods should be preferred as much as possible. A protein-based diet will accelerate the healing of the surgical area and increase the likelihood of success of the bone graft procedure.

Incorrect surgical technique, poor oral hygiene or the graft patient having various systemic disorders can cause the procedure to fail.

Bone grafts are most commonly used in the presence of bone insufficiency during implant treatments. Sometimes it can also be used in tooth extraction sockets to accelerate ossification in cases where implants cannot be made immediately after tooth extraction.

In the presence of jawbone cysts, bone grafts can be used to reconstruct the area after the cyst is removed from the area.

In cases where implant treatment cannot be performed or is not preferred by the patient, alternatives to bone powders and implant treatment can be produced. In such cases, tooth loss is addressed with traditional techniques. These can be bridge restorations or removable dentures.

Bone grafts can be applied to almost all patients over the age of 18. However, some patients have a lower success rate than others. The probability of success may decrease in patients with systemic disorders such as diabetes and sinusitis patients who will undergo sinus lifting procedure.

Depending on the amount of graft to be applied, the procedure can be completed between 30 and 90 minutes.

As with any surgery performed in the oral region, there are situations that should be considered after the bone grafting procedure. Heavy sports should be avoided and possible trauma to the area should be prevented. In addition, if bone graft was used during the sinus lifting procedure, blowing should be avoided and sneezing should be more careful and gentle. Otherwise, bone graft application may fail.
